Malicious Websites Display Infections on your PC

by Lead Geek on Sep.19, 2009, under PC TechSup News

Virus  There has been an Increase in Websites that trick you into thinking your PC Has Been infected with malicious software. There are embedded Windows or Pop Ups that appear to be scanning your system & revealing your infected and then informing you to download their removal software These are fraudulent websites attempting to force you into removing Malicious software that they tricked you into downloading in the first place! Most all PC Infections are due to the User clicking on the link or downloading and executing software. Be Alert when surfing a new site sometimes search engines will be tricked into sending you to a site with malicious code. Recently a lottery search on google landed the user on a malicious site. Most windows versions are now patched up pretty well so Hackers have resorted to tricking users into infecting themselves. Then requiring you to buy the removal software to correct the false infections. Downloading video codecs is another way to infect a PC. Beware of any social networking site that invites you to download a codec to watch a video. So what is the point of these infections? They create a network of zombie PC’s that can be used for Denial of Service Attacks. Valuable data can be sent back to creator of the malicious software. Keep this in mind when surfing online it is better to close the page or Exit any pop up claiming you should download or install an Active X control or Installer package. When you can not close the program Task Manager can be used to end task. Your best offense is a good defense be aware of normal alerts on your PC.  Protecting your PC begins with you. You are the weakest link that sometimes is exploited. The best security software can not protect us from ourselves. Our PC does what we tell it to do in most cases.

Here is a Video of Malicious Website Dispaying this type of  False Infection

There have also been E-Mails with invoice attachments claiming your item  shipped with a major shipping vendor. These E-mails are very enticing to open because they state your purchase of a item has shipped. They state a item of value has been purchased by you and has been undeliverable you should open the invoice to assist in delivery. When you open the invoice you have infected your PC! Businesses looking at Methods for protecting your E-Mail should include a Spam & Virus protection software & services such as Panda TrustLayer & Gatedefender or Barracuda Network Appliances. Security Gateways are an excellent measure of protection. These devices scan traffic coming in to your network and block potentially unsafe content either Web or E-Mail before it reaches your end user.

Now for some guidelines for securing your Windows 7 & Windows Vista PC. Microsoft Windows 7 introduces a breakthrough user experience and is designed to help you feel confident in your ability to view, find, and organize information and to control your computing experience. Windows Windows 7  has been engineered to be the most secure version of Windows yet. The new features in Windows 7  help to give you the control and confidence you need to get the most out of your PC. This article will briefly discuss some of the security options these great new features provide for you.

  • User Account Control: enabling users to adjust the level of User rights
  • Parental Controls: Monitoring and managing your children’s computer privileges
  • Internet Explorer 8: a major step forward in ease of use and security
  • BitLocker™ Drive Encryption: a new data protection feature

In addition to the feature overviews, we’ll offer some ways you can increase your system security to get even greater protection.  Using the information in this article you should be able to configure and manage all of these great security features on your new Windows 7 machine.

Internet Explorer 8 Security features:

Security features Vs. Convienience

Security is about making choices.  Tighten things too much to protect the system, and users have problems doing what they want.  Focus on ease of use by opening up settings broadly and you expose the system to attack.  Finding the right balance is just not easy.  Add the need to satisfy multiple classes of users – home, professional, business, etc. – and the problem takes on a level of impossibility. If you take your choice of security software for instance Avira, Panda Software, Bit Defender, AVG Which are excellent choices in defending your PC against infections of Viruses. These programs also may cause other programs to not work properly.

In the goal to make Windows 7 the most secure version of Windows ever, Microsoft has worked hard to define default security settings that protect users while keeping the system usable with those protections enabled.

Understanding Users & Administrators

To help explain the issues in this article and some of the changes made in Windows 7, it is helpful to get a grasp on the user account concept.  Essentially, user accounts are unique profiles assigned to each person using a system.  As with real life, some users can do more than others.  Regular users, called Standard Users, can do many things on a system but certain changes will require special administrative privileges.

Pandemic and Your I T Plan for Business Continuity

by Lead Geek on Sep.18, 2009, under Best Practices for Technology, PC TechSup News

Information Worker Businesses planning for H1N1 should be considering I T in their plan and how it may reduce the impact of employees not being able to perform their functions. Does your Business have a Server? If you said yes to this question have you configured remote or terminal services? Using these features could save you lost time and money due to unproductive employees. Configuration is simple and ease of use is as easy as accessing your company web page. There are several ways to secure your remote access depending on your needs and your wallet.  This Pandemic may not cause much trouble but in the event it does how will your business fair with the loss of a few employees? It is recommended that those who become infected stay home for a couple of days after recovery! So if you have a server chances are it’s under utilized and can be  used to keep your company productive and your employees healthy.

If your company uses notebook computers, offline files may be another way to keep your employees some what productive during down time. I am not recommending companies crack the whip while employees are ill, but due to the extended recovery time required to prevent the spread of H1N1 (swine flu). Having a Business Continuity Plan in place for your I T will certainly help minimize the effect that could impact your business.

In the event you do not have a server. There are options available to those businesses looking for an alternative solution. Cloud Computing is beginning to become very popular due to its scalability and Virtualized Resources. These hosted services reside on the Internet. Some providers Include Microsoft Office Online, Google Apps, Salesforce and others. Software as a Service (SaaS) or Platform as a Service (PaaS) are offered over the Internet and can be accessed form anywhere. Software and Data are stored on the host servers. This can be a very attractive solution because it does not require new infrastructure other than moving data to your hosted solution. All these features can be accessed from a Web Browser!Cloud Computing

 Pros:

Easily accessed from anywhere no complicated software to install. A way to increase capacity without investing in new Infastructer or licensing new software

Cons:

Internet connection required, Monthly subscripton fees, Data is Hosted by Internet Servers

With all this in mind I hope your I T stradegy includes protection against air born viruses that infect your employees of your I T infrastructure. Ways to protect your employees from infection is a policy of having hand sanitizers in place at all workstations. Requiring all users to sanitize their hands when using a worstation. Coughing into your arm as opposed to your hand. My hopes are that it is all just media hype. Just in case these solutions should be considered for any business.

I’m A PC!

by Lead Geek on Sep.13, 2009, under PC TechSup News

I'm a PC So here we are with the Holiday advertising starting to begin and Apple Mac has started their Bash the PC Campaign! So over the last few months Microsoft has used the PC Vs. Mac Campaign. Well it’s about time Microsoft uses Apple’s ad’s to their advantage. It seems that the PC could have a good fourth quarter with the release of Microsoft Windows 7. This clash of the titans is very entertaining to say the least. I am still wondering why the Mac still carries a premium price tag. For one thing they are on the same hardware platform as a Windows PC. I wonder how many Mac Potential customers would be swayed to a PC knowing that its the same hardware under the hood.  That’s right Intel Processors & Chipsets can be found in a Mac today.

Moving on to The stability of the OS question. I was at a seminar recently that utilized a Mac for a presentation and watched it freeze and become non responsive. I couldn’t resist yelling out I’m A PC! Mac’s must have their fair share of glitches.  Most people are familair with the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) in older windows versions. Well MS Windows Vista & Windows 7 have increased the reliability.  Considering Hardware & Operating System Stability the PC wins out in the Price contest. I really can not understand the Mac’s pricing. What is it that gives it a premium Price? I dont think we can make the Apples Vs, Oranges comparison anymore. It is more a matter of spending 3 digits or 4 digits. Also I find it quite comical that Mac’s Ad campaign for Get a Mac starts with “Why your next PC should be a Mac!”  A Mac is a PC Funny how they adopted our Hardware Platform

I T & Data BackUp Disaster Recovery Plan

by Lead Geek on Jul.31, 2009, under Managed Services MSP

Most People take their technology for granted. They rely on it, like the simple things like E-Mail for instance. If you lose your E-Mail what would that do to your business. Just losing the service alone is enough to give some business owners an anxiety attack. Most people use outlook to manage their contacts. I would say that most people do not backup their outlook database. If this was lost, this would be a major Set back. This is just one aspect of your data that should be backed up regulary. If you own a business you should have a BackUp Disaster Recvovery Plan. To start a business continuity plan any business with multiple computers should have a server. The Server is the one place everything will be managed and stored at. You may think of this as an expensive solution. In the long run it pays for it self as there is a single point to manage the network. Using a Peer to Peer network is tougher to manage. Files are duplicated and confusion costs your business time and money. If a single machine goes down in this environment what have you lost? How long would it take to recreate the files. Some things may not be able to be recovered or replaced. A Hard Drive Crash as depicted below could be redered unuseable! This could cause a bussiness to go out of business because they never recovered their lost data. What is your business worth?

This Is What a Hard Drive Crash Looks Like!

This Is What a Hard Drive Crash Looks Like!

Installing a server is the first step in having a disaster recovery plan. If you already have a server you know what the benefits are. One of the benefits is if a single workstation fails a user can log onto another workstation and continue to be productive while the other workstation is being repaired. Technology has come along way. The time to restore a workstation can be as little as 1 hour. We can have a Image of a workstation and have it bootable in a virtual machine in 5 minutes. What would technology like this be worth to your business. We can Virtualize Servers and PC’s to minimize down time. Using these preventive measures we can reduce the cost of a disaster, should one occur. Keeping your employees productive and minimizing the down time is part of your BackUp Disaster Recovery Plan.

There are many levels of protection and first a foremost what ever you are doing needs to be tested. No one wants to find out that the Tape BackUp is no good because the Tapes are a few years old. According to Microsoft, 42% of attempted recoveries from tape backups in the past year have failed. A good BackUp Plan can start at around $1,000.00 and up. There are less expensive solutions depending on your needs. Considering what is your Data worth to you. Choose a reliable solution that fits your needs. Also keep in mind to keep a copy of your data off site

What are your BackUp Options well the Hardware could Include a External Hard Drive, NAS (Network Attached Storage) or New Solid State Storage Drives. We do not recommend tape drives these are to often a failed recovery device. Software options should include imaging technology Acronis True Image & StorageCraft Shadow Protect are excellent programs. Depending on your current use of technology will dictate how complex a BackUp solution needs to be. Something most businesses fail to do is maintain a good backup or keep it current. There are companies now offering Managed Services. That will Implement a Plan, Manage it, Test it and be responsible for keeping your business up and running. A BackUp Disaster Recovery Plan is a key Component of a Managed Services Agreement. We will cover managed services in our Blog soon.

If you are interested in hearing about New Solutions for Disaster Recovery. PC TechSup can do a free evaluation. Recommend a solution to fit anyone’s budget.

Windows XP vs Windows 7

by Lead Geek on Jul.25, 2009, under PC TechSup News

Tile-W7-Pro_h_160x160rgb I am sure this will be an interesting topic. My opinion is this, we are at the cross roads again and I am feeling a kind of deja vu. I remember back in September 2001 when Windows XP was released. Microsoft was in a kind of funk after the Windows Millennium Release. Manufactures continued to sell Windows 98 SE over Windows ME & Windows 2000 which was adopted by businesses. Consumers had a comfort level with Windows 98. Some people do not adapt well to change. So there we were at hurdle from Windows 98 to windows XP Now we are at the hurdle of Windows XP to Windows 7. Strange how Windows XP had Windows Millennium as a predecessor and Microsoft Windows 7 has Windows Vista. Once again we have the consumer and a comfort level. Some of you embrace change while and others do not. There is a big shift in the way Windows XP appears to how Windows Vista & Windows 7 Appears. The Start Menu has been changed again this was a factor in XP that Upset a few Windows 98 Users. The new search feature in Windows Vista and Windows 7 makes finding programs easier when there are lots of them to choose from.

So why adopt Microsoft Windows 7 and face change again. Well if you are still running Windows XP it is likely your PC is 4-5 years old and do for replacement. If your PC is a later PC you may have 64 Bit Processing technology, but only running a 32 Bit OS so an upgrade to a new OS would be a performance gain. The good news is those of you who have purchased a new Windows Vista PC recently may have a free upgrade path to Windows 7. The problem here is you have to do a clean install and be sure you have a backup. Then we have to  choose a 32 Bit or 64 Bit version of the OS. If your PC is 64 Bit capable then I recommend upgrading to the 64 Bit Version. if you have 32 Bit applications to be concerned about then the option of loading Window XP in a Virtual Machine is the answer. XP Mode in Microsoft Windows 7 is available for download from Microsoft. This will not be pre installed with the Windows 7 installation. There are two components the Virtual Machine and the XP Mode Image. The downside to this is you now have two Operating Systems to maintain. Virus software is needed for the Virtual Machine and Critical Updates must be kept Current. One of the benefits of XP Mode is that a 32 Bit application will open the Virtual Machine in a normal window transparent to the user knowing the virtual machine is running. Second benefit is Microsoft is making XP Mode available for download for free and a License Key is not needed. One draw back of XP Mode is that it requires a Processor that supports virtualization.

For more 64 Bit Info: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/features/64-bit-support

Now that we have discussed 32 Bit and 64 Bit versions we can talk about the Flavors! It seems Microsoft is going the Baskin Robins approach with 31 Flavors. I am just kidding but there are serveral releases that may or may not be for you. The releases are as follows:

  • Microsoft Windows 7 Starter Edition (for Netbook Use Only)
  • Microsoft Windows 7 Home Basic (for Internet & E-Mail use)
  • Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (for Power Users & Multimedia)
  • Microsoft Windows 7 Professional (Business Use & Domain fuctionality)
  • Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate/Enterprise (Business Use & Multimedia, Domain Funtionality)

 For more details visit: http://windows7center.com/news/major-features-of-each-windows-7-version-sku-revealed/

I hope that my brief discriptions will help minimize any confusion on what flavor is right for you. As an OEM system builder I adopted Microsoft Windows Vista early on and watched it mature into a useable product. In the past 2 months of evaluating Microsoft Windows 7 I am happy with it and using it as my primary machine in my own business! I hope that shows my comfort level in the product. There are still lots of Microsoft Windows XP PC’s that come into our service center for service mostly due to infection of Viruses, Malware & Spyware. XP has come a long way and has become as secure as possible, but Windows Vista & Windows 7 are far more secure if the default windows settings are used and security software is up to date and running. In general a Windows Vista or Windows 7 Machine should it be infected are much easier to clean up. Good House keeping on any computer will help prevent malicious code from infecting any computer.

If you are interested in ordering a custom Microsoft Windows 7 PC with XP Mode Preinstalled. Then contact PC TechSup for Advanced orders for Delivery in October. We will build to your specifications. A free consultation will be provided of what version would best suit your needs.

ResponsePoint VOIP Telephone System

by Lead Geek on Jul.22, 2009, under Telecommunications

ResponsePoint_online_horizontal_reversedcolor160Are you happy with your current phone system? Is your old Phone system hard to maintain? Adding a new user requires a service call. Do you currently have more then one line in use and using standard multi line phones? These phones usually do not support independent Voice Mail boxes. They often require someone to Yell over to someone to pick up line #.  Are you moving and looking for a better phone system to replace your old antiquated phone system? How would you like to save hundreds of $$$ on your phone bill? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you may want to consider your telecommunications options. Your phone system more than likely is the first point of contact with a new customer. So this is an important area to address for your customers first impression of your business. There are lots of phone systems to look at. One of the systems I would like to talk about. Microsoft Response Point is positioned to fit the small to medium businesses. The Response Point Phone System offers Enterprise level of Telecommunications at a affordable price point. TheAastra6757i203x125 system has a easy to use software package for administration. No more calls to your vender for changes to your PBX Phone System. Response Point has a Client software for each user to be able to manage their phone. All Voice Mail can be sent to your E-Mail. This is a huge benefit for being able to archive voice mail. Microsoft Response Point has an auto attendant for call routing. The voice recognition software works very well. Having the auto attendant handle calls saves money because the caller selects the person or group they would like to speak with. This frees up employee time and lessens the distractions of having to answer calls. There can be a receptionist configured so a live person answers the calls on a schedule then the auto attendant answers calls in the evening. For a live demo of the MS Response Point System call PC TechSup @ 267-308-0515. The Response Point PBX System Has plenty of room for growth with support for up to 50 users. RP can be easily installed on an existing network. Does this video sound familiar This saves a considerable amont of money when moving your business. Because your only using network linse for both your Voice and Data. Response Point Supports Analog, PRI circut, T1 & SIP Trunks. This system should easily integrate into your existing business. Use of SIP Trunks or Outbound VOIP provider can save you hundreds of dollars. I have put together a Power Point presentation that you can view. Stay ahead of the technology curve get the best in digital phones. We would be happy to answer any of your questions. Just leave a comment.

PC Recycling & Disposal

by Lead Geek on Jul.18, 2009, under GO Green IT!

In my last article I discussed how those old PC’s may be costing you money. Well now I wanted to discuss what to do with them. There are lots of programs out there that will take donated PC’s and fix or rebuild them so that those who cannot afford a PC can get one. This is a good taxRec-Reuse write off as well. Most local government agencies have a program for safe disposal of hazardous waste. There are lots of recycling companies that will dispose of your equipment properly. If you are in the Montgomery County Pennsylvania area. PC TechSup will except your old PC’s. We Can remove & destroy your data Using Department of Defense Standards for a small fee and donate them to a local program or disposal service. We can also pick them up if you have a large number of PC’s. A small fee also applies to this service. Everyone benefits from this program instead of just sending them to a landfill. It amazes me to see all the PC’s that are sitting out on the curb. Here are a few links that you can use for Pennsylvania electronic recycling programs.
